2025-01-29T18:29:57+02:00

As we sign off on January, it's been a month of major moves in markets. Globally, the valuation risks in AI were thrust into the spotlight in recent days based on the emergence of DeepSeek. Geopolitical risks are also a major feature of 2025, with some of Trump's recent actions showing that we are in for a bumpy ride. And yet, there are some turnaround stories out there that had a great January. Is the market looking for value opportunities in unusual places based on fear of how far tech has run? Nike, Walgreens and Burberry have all been researched in Magic Markets Premium this month and we highlight that basket in this show.

Intuit: A Solution Looking for a Problem?

2024-11-27T21:00:43+02:00

Intuit owns software-as-a-service platforms that are a feature of so many small businesses. QuickBooks and MailChimp are common choices for accounting and mailing list solutions, while TurboTax has a huge customer base in the US across personal and business users. There are other businesses like Credit Karma, aimed at personal finance users. These are decent businesses in isolation, but can Intuit find ways to make them more valuable by being together in the same group? Or are they simply paying lip service to synergies and AI enhancements?

Microsoft: Partly Cloudy

2024-11-06T21:28:20+02:00

Microsoft is the OG when it comes to enterprise computing. As mature as the business is, there are still plenty of growth drivers – especially when it comes to AI, with Microsoft at the forefront of this trend across offerings like OpenAI and Copilot. Even Bing is somehow managing to increase in popularity thanks to AI! Behind all this excitement lies an important reality: the data centre investment cycle is very different to the software-as-a-service predictability that Microsoft investors are accustomed to. Will this impact the valuation over time?

Tesla: Trying to Put the Auto in Automobile

2024-07-10T22:23:22+02:00

Tesla – a car company, or not. If you believe it is, then you won’t go near this valuation. If you back the story that this is a technology powerhouse with a bright future in autonomous driving, then you just might. As we cover in this research report as a pre-cursor to the next quarterly earnings release, the economics around the automotive business have deteriorated sharply. For Tesla bulls, it’s never been more important for the FSD thesis to come to the fore.

Intel: Chipping Away at a Turnaround

2024-05-29T21:56:51+02:00

If you need a reminder of where Intel comes from, Gordon Moore (of Moore’s Law fame) was a co-founder of Intel. They were at the cutting edge of semiconductors before being left behind by competitors in Asia. The journey back to the top is painful and long, with many disappointed shareholders along the way. With the group now split into two profit centres and truly nowhere to hide, is this the time to believe in the turnaround?

Amazon’s management talks about it being early days in all of their businesses. That’s quite a statement for one of the world’s most valuable and exciting companies to make. Is this just a classic case of a growth stock trying to support its valuation multiple, or does Amazon still have enough runway? With performance well ahead of the Nasdaq-100 this year, Amazon has caught up some of the lost ground. Can it keep going?

Alphabet: Old Dog, New Tricks

2024-05-01T21:01:53+02:00

It took Google 15 years to reach $100 billion in annual review. It then took just 6 years to triple it to $300 billion. But perhaps the most impressive statistic of all is that the company expects to end the 2024 financial year with an annualised run rate of $100 billion revenue in YouTube and Cloud combined, let alone Search. With growth of around 55% in the share price in the past 12 months, Alphabet has even outperformed Microsoft over that period. Perhaps Alphabet really is the old dog that can learn new tricks.
