The Trade Desk: Down a Third

2025-02-19T19:26:55+02:00

The Trade Desk is an exciting company with a wonderful growth story in the online advertising space. The infamous “J-curves” do exist out there, with The Trade Desk as a perfect example of how revenue can really ramp up. Alas, it’s also an example of how stock-based compensation can skew the economics in favour of executives rather than shareholders. The recent pain in the share price shows what happens when a valuation gets too hot, so it really is a great company to cover in the growth space.

2024-11-20T21:51:24+02:00

Disney is looking healthier these days and the share price has responded positively. Aside from improvements in streaming, they've had two major box office hits in 2024 - is this the dawn of a new creative era at Disney, or will the old mistakes slip back in?

Amazon: Delivering

2024-11-13T18:06:58+02:00

Amazon has been a story of a platform business blossoming into profitability after a period of extensive investment. With a formidable moat in both eCommerce and cloud, along with a valuation multiple below major peers, is Amazon becoming one of the better Magnificent 7 opportunities?

Netflix: Priced for Glory

2024-10-23T18:22:05+02:00

Netflix has everything going its way right now, from hit shows to great financial results. The market loves the story and has signed up for a full season of growth, paying high multiples once more for a company that was thrown to the wayside just a couple of years ago. Can the good times continue, or will the multiple prove to be too hot?

Meta: Advertising Intelligence

2024-08-07T13:43:06+02:00

Meta is the GOAT when it comes to social media, but this particular goat strayed off the path in 2022 and gave investors serious headaches. After a big scare for both the market and Zuckerberg’s teams, Meta took a more measured approach and got spending back in line. The results since then have been excellent, with a wonderful share price recovery and vastly improved market sentiment. Meta is a dark horse for AI, with most of the initial attention having gone to ChatGPT. Can Zuckerberg’s empire keep up the momentum and become the AI winner over time?

Take-Two Interactive: The Long Game

2024-07-31T17:56:25+02:00

CrowdStrike is a rockstar in the technology world, with great branding and a founder known for his love for motorsport and even his participation. Cybersecurity can be cool it seems, but nobody thought it was cool when CrowdStrike’s update broke Windows machines across America in the past week. With the share price suffering a huge slide in the aftermath, is this a buying opportunity? Or could this be the knock to CrowdStrike’s growth that it cannot afford at this valuation?

Amazon: In Their Prime

2024-05-08T23:15:44+02:00

Amazon’s management talks about it being early days in all of their businesses. That’s quite a statement for one of the world’s most valuable and exciting companies to make. Is this just a classic case of a growth stock trying to support its valuation multiple, or does Amazon still have enough runway? With performance well ahead of the Nasdaq-100 this year, Amazon has caught up some of the lost ground. Can it keep going?

Alphabet: Old Dog, New Tricks

2024-05-01T21:01:53+02:00

It took Google 15 years to reach $100 billion in annual review. It then took just 6 years to triple it to $300 billion. But perhaps the most impressive statistic of all is that the company expects to end the 2024 financial year with an annualised run rate of $100 billion revenue in YouTube and Cloud combined, let alone Search. With growth of around 55% in the share price in the past 12 months, Alphabet has even outperformed Microsoft over that period. Perhaps Alphabet really is the old dog that can learn new tricks.

Netflix: Can the Show Go On?

2024-04-24T19:53:36+02:00

270 million households. Over 190 countries. The ability to turn anyone in a world famous star with a single documentary or series. Netflix won many streaming battles and it seems to have won the war. After growth in subscribers stagnated last year and sent the share price into freefall, a recent rally has been driven by a resurgence in subscriber growth and improved user economics. As Netflix really comes into its own, how should investors be thinking about the company that was criminally left out of the Magnificent Seven?

Disney: Proxy Wars

2024-04-10T10:46:52+02:00

Despite boasting 17 consecutive years of dividend increases, Emera has been an underperformer on the market relative to a peer like Next Era Energy, which we recently covered here on Magic Markets Premium. As we continue to operate in an environment of higher rates and a focus on yields, does Emera offer compelling value, or is this more likely to be a value trap?
